Chinese Dumplings with a Maine Twist

Let’s make dumplings! Join instructor Jeff Mao to learn about – and make – a variety of Chinese dumpling styles using Maine ingredients from local farms and producers. Try your hand at making three different kinds of dumpling dough with Maine Grains flour – and then use those doughs to make three kinds of dumplings: steamed, boiled and steam-fried. Mix up some pork and shrimp filling and learn a variety of folding techniques before cooking up your dumpling creations. And, of course, spend a little time making dipping sauces to accompany them! We'll provide all the ingredients, materials and equipment, plus recipe sheets and product lists to take home.

Welcome spring with beautiful colors and mosaics using buttons! Utilizing the pointillistic techniques of Neo-Impressionists to include Seurat, Signac, and Van Gough, you will use points of color to create a “bigger picture”. Who knew a button could do so much? Please pre-register as a minimum of 4 people is required to run the course.

Explore the significance of knives as essential tools throughout history, used for cutting, carving, and shaping materials. While knives remain crucial in the modern era, many have limited their use to the kitchen. Rediscover confidence and resilience by mastering basic knife safety and carving skills. This course offers a comprehensive understanding of knives, guiding students to create practical utensils. Students will make a fine pair of chopsticks and/or a jam spreader. Next, try to make a spinning top! We’ll cover safety, techniques, good form, and various basic carving projects using a variety of green woods.

Create a “Welcome” Bumblebee Deco Mesh Wreath W24

Amy will supply the materials to make a Stunning “Welcome” Bumblebee deco-mesh wreath and will guide you through the process to create a beautiful 24-inch wreath. We will have an intermission halfway through the three-hour class. Amy will provide snacks and drinks. This class is very relaxed and has a fun atmosphere.  A $30 materials fee is due to Amy Harrington at the start of class.

Amy is a mom of four and has been crafting for over 13 years. Amy discovered a passion for wreath-making in 2021 and has been mastering the craft ever since. She enjoys bringing joy to her customers’ homes, warming hearts, and seeing the wonder in her students’ eyes as they say, “I made that!” Amy attends out-of-state workshops and takes classes online from her coaches to stay on top of the up-and-coming trends. She looks forward to sharing her passion with you.

Hiking Fundamentals: Planning, Safety, and Gear Demystified

This talk is a comprehensive introduction to Hiking Basics but includes tidbits for all levels of hikers. Hike Smart, Hike Safe. Participants will be introduced to essential hiking knowledge and skills required to hike safely. Topics include gear selection: footwear, clothing and equipment; navigation tools; planning for various weather conditions; safety and basic first aid supplies; and what to include in a survival kit. A list of resources will be provided, a collection of hiking books will be available for perusal, and gear will be available for hands-on review. The evening will conclude with a slide show of hiking and backpacking trips. The slides showcase breathtaking images capturing the essence of hiking and backpacking adventures across various U.S. national parks, the beautiful state of Maine and the stunning landscapes of the French Alps. It takes viewers on a visual journey through iconic trails, showcasing diverse terrains, from the Grand Canyon's majestic vistas to the red sandstone of Canyonlands, to Knife Edge and Baxter State Park. The narration highlights key experiences, including search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, emphasizing the thrill of exploration, encounters with wildlife, and the visual richness and natural beauty of each location. The information presented and narrative of unforgettable outdoor experiences is intended to inspire you to hike! Compasses and whistles will be available at the class for a fee.

Jenny Cusick is an avid outdoors person. Her passions include running, hiking, backpacking, bicycling touring/bikepacking, and kayaking. Jenny spent ~10 years volunteering with the Pemigewasset Search and Rescue Team in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In 2023 she spent 66 days bikepacking 2700 miles from Banff, Canada to Antelop Wells, New Mexico.

Basic Cyanotype: Capture the Sun's Magic

Unleash your inner artist with the sun as your paintbrush! This beginner-friendly cyanotype workshop will demystify the fascinating world of alternative photography and guide you through every step of creating your own stunning, sun-kissed prints. We'll break down the science behind cyanotype, safely mix and prepare the light-sensitive chemicals, and walk you through applying them to paper. Then, it's time to let the sun do its magic! We'll explore different ways to expose your artwork, from using leaves and objects to creating layered effects. The fun doesn't stop there, experiment with stencils and botanical specimens for unique creative possibilities. Most materials will be supplied for this workshop! Please bring scissors, 1' to 2" flat paintbrush and any special papers or fabrics you would like to use. This workshop is 2 Days: 5/21 + 5/28. There is a $50 materials fee, payable to the instructor on the first night of class, you will keep the contact print frame at the end of class and any leftover solution.

Beginner Ceramics

Ever wanted to take some time for yourself and play with clay? Learn the basics of hand building and wheel throwing in this 6 week class. This class is geared toward the beginner. The first 10 people to sign up have priority on the wheel. Please let admins know if you prefer to hand build or wheel throw so we can keep an accurate account. Glazing will also be covered so that you can leave with finished pieces. $65 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first night of class. *Purchasing additional clay: The fee is an additional $65 to cover the firing, glazes and other consumables used during class. Please note: If you miss a class, you cannot make-up the class at another time. The ceramics schedule is very tight and these classes are usually full.
