This two-hour course will include walking in the woods to find edible wild food along with detailed descriptions of plant habitat and structure of the plants. Bring: Notebook and pen, basket, mesh or other bags, wax or brown paper bags, knife, bug repellent and hat, water or other refreshment and a snack, gloves, waterproof boots (preferred), tall socks you can tuck your pant legs. Optional: gps, backpack, field guide, magnifying glass

Make Your Own Kimchi

Join Ger Tysk of Belfast-based Red Kettle Kimchi for an afternoon of kimchi making! Learn the basics of traditional Korean kimchi fermentation as Ger guides you to make a batch of your own napa cabbage kimchi to take home. You'll also explore other kinds of kimchi and fermented East Asian foods and get ideas for pairing everyday foods with your finished kimchi. All materials and recipes will be provided.

Catching the Light

A plein air painting workshop that concentrates on creating a method to “Catch the Light” and the essence of the day. Students work on various forms of compositional planning, including notan, value studies, directional lines and color proportion swatches. Learning to use these tools, will help artists capture the essence of the scene before the light shifts. Students will work at two different locations. Through careful planning and a clear focus students will be able to quickly create a successful painting outdoors in the shifting light. All media are welcome, oils, acrylics, drawing and watercolor. Students should be comfortable with the medium they choose. The instructor is mainly versed in watercolor and water soluble oils. Students should bring a sketchbook, color pencils and a black sharpie pen as well as their usual plein air painting supplies. Please note: This is a two day 6 hour (each day) workshop about design and painting outside. All media and levels are welcome. Bring your own lunch/snacks.

Boston's Dragon Boat Festival Trip

Come to Boston’s Dragon Boat Festival and experience the food, art, culture, marital arts, music, and dragon boat races of China with your guide Chris Toy. We’ll take the Downeaster out of Brunswick to Boston’s North Station, take the subway to the festival spend the day on both shores of the Charles River near Harvard Square. We’ll end the day by heading to Chinatown for a Dim Sum feast, or you can explore the many Asian restaurants, bakeries, and shops on your own. Wear sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothing for the weather.

Train departs Brunswick Station at 7:10 am and returns from Boston’s North End Station 5:20 pm. We will get back to Brunswick around 8:40 PM. No refunds. Cost does not include meals or entry fees, but does include transportation via Amtrak, a Charlie Card worth three subway trips, and your tour guide Chris Toy

Boston Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

Sunday, June 9th is the date for this day of fun and exploration with adventurer-extraordinaire Chris Toy! We’ll board the Amtrak Downeaster in Portland and travel in comfort to North Station in Boston.
A quick subway ride takes us close to the John W. Weeks Footbridge on the Charles River in Cambridge where we’ll get to experience many cultural activities along Memorial Drive. Events include: food vendors, parades, dancers, drummers, martial arts demonstrations, cultural arts and crafts. We’ll cheer on our favorite Dragon Boat racers. When we’ve had our fill of excitement, we’ll meander over to Chinatown and choose one of Chris’ favorite dimsum restaurants.
After making our way back to North Station, we’ll hop on the Downeaster’s 4:15 train and relax on our way back to Portland.
Walking shoes are highly recommended.
Plan for “iffy” weather.
Bring funds for souvenir purchases and dimsum lunch.
Trip includes: Round trip Downeaster ticket, subway ticket, professional guiding by Chris Toy!

Monthly Storytime Adventures are curated to include a copy of the storybook for each child registered. A comprehensive craft to accompany the book, along with a take-home and follow-up for parents/guardians to continue the discussions from our Adventure together. The outdoors, movement, and opportunity for creative outlet are encouraged.

These sessions are ideal for parents/guardians of children birth to 4 years. Parent/Guardian discussions will be monthly to discuss topics of how to integrate literacy into our lives with the assistance of Community Partners.
