Strengthen your core, improve your flexibility, shake and shimmy off inches while moving to the beautiful mysterious melodies of the Old World. As a means of self-expression, this ancient art inspires grace, poise and confidence and boosts self-esteem. Wear comfortable clothing such as a tank top and capri pants. Hip scarves are optional, but useful and fun. INSTRUCTOR: Lew-Ann Leen attended Dance Teacher Training School at Kent State. Beyond Beginners Ukulele - Something Old Something New!

Calendar May 7, 2019 at 6 pm, runs for 2 weeks

Get ready to take your ukulele playing to another level with Duncan Perry! Using his song-based approach, you will explore left hand ornamentation techniques including hammering on and slides. The right hand will get a work out as you expand your knowledge of strumming and finger picking by learning such skills as triplets and muting. More chords will be added to your tool box and you will learn how to transpose songs from one key to another. Of course, there will be many laughs along the way. The pace will be geared to the proficiency level of those enrolling. At a minimum, all students are expected to know basic chord formations in the Keys of C and G and be capable of smooth chord transitions. If you love playing the ukulele and you want to enhance your knowledge of this wonderful instrument, this course is a must. Please have a serviceable soprano, concert, or tenor size ukulele, an electronic tuner, a music stand and a passion for playing.

Learn about becoming a Big Brother or Sister to a child, or helping out at a local after-school mentoring program. Lisa Wilson and Heather Selin will share information and stories about Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Mid-Maine's impact in the midcoast, discuss the agency's specific volunteer needs and the challenges and benefits for volunteers. They will answer your questions about the many ways you can help children in our community and develop relationships that will transform you as well. Join us to learn how you can make a difference in a child's life right here in our community. The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Mid-Maine is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring mentor relationships that change their lives for the better, forever, because all children deserve to achieve success in life. Learn about becoming a Big Brother or Sister to a child, helping out at a local BBBS after-school program or volunteering at our Bowl For Kid's Sake fundraising event this spring. Birding: May walkabout at Fort Foster

If you’ve ever wondered how knives are created or want to gain some basic blacksmithing skills, join this two session workshop offered by blacksmith Adriaan Gerber at his workshop in Ellsworth. You’ll learn basic forging, filing and heat treating techniques, as well as how to fit a handle to your knife. You’ll leave with your own steel knife made with your own hands. Gerber believes this project builds self-empowerment and confidence. It also offers a glimpse into an ancient art form practiced through the ages. All knives are made from raw materials, ensuring a level of craftsmanship that only handmade articles can have. No previous experience necessary. Please bring leather gloves and eye protection, as well as a bag lunch and drink. There is a $25.00 material fee payable to the instructor at the first class. Makeup class (if needed) 05/12/19.

Adriaan Gerber is a knife maker from Ellsworth who has been making sharp, pointy things for a decade. Before that, he was a software consultant at Boston University. He believes that forging objects from steel is simply the coolest thing you will ever learn.
